Terephthalic acid ligands

A similar strategy of using photoactivation to cleave what may be viewed as protecting groups can similarly be used in the postsynthetic modification of MOFs. Of the recent work involving aromatic ligands, that of Taube and Sebera is perhaps the most striking (13, 74). They were able to demonstrate that an electron can be transferred from Cr(II) to Co (IIP through a conjugated system involving the metals and terephthalic acid derivatives. This indicates possible synthetic applications of these reactions. 

The oxidation of p-xylene to terephthalic acid occurs by the same general mechanism as described above for alkylaromatics. Bromide ions and nitrogen-containing ligands provide synergetic mixtures with metal salts [56-58,61]. Pyridine is one of the most efficient additives [59,60j. Oxo-centered cobalt(III) clusters have been isolated from the reaction mixtures, which can be regarded as active intermediates [34,62,63]. The optimum catalytic activity was found to be associated with the composition corresponding to Co Br py = 1 2 (1-2) [64].
