Tensile set

The combination of flexibility, clarity and tensile set and low heat seal temperatures (Table 18) enables syndiotactic polypropenes to be applied instead of PVC, EVA and LLDPE in films, foils and extruder products.

TPE crosslinked on irradiation. Its tensile strength increased by about 30% at 10 kGy, but at 500 kGy it dropped to about one third of the value for the non-irradiated sample. The modulus was not much affected by irradiation. The elongation at break, tear strength, tensile set after failure, and energy at rupture were similarly affected up to 10 kGy they were unchanged, but at higher doses their values drastically declined, most likely because of radiation-induced oxidation.

Tensile testing machines are usually equipped with chambers, which maintain low or elevated temperatures. This is specially important in testing properties of plasticized materials. The standard also describes a machine for determination of tensile set. Equipment required to cut ring samples and fixtures needed to use them in testing equipment are also discussed in detail. Standard also evaluates within and between laboratory testing preei-sion.
