The manner in which potential should vary across an oil-water interface is shown in Fig. XIV-5, after van den Tempel [35]. Here AV denotes the surface... [Pg.506]

For example, van den Tempel [35] reports the results shown in Fig. XIV-9 on the effect of electrolyte concentration on flocculation rates of an O/W emulsion. Note that d ln)ldt (equal to k in the simple theory) increases rapidly with ionic strength, presumably due to the decrease in double-layer half-thickness and perhaps also due to some Stem layer adsorption of positive ions. The preexponential factor in Eq. XIV-7, ko = (8kr/3 ), should have the value of about 10 " cm, but at low electrolyte concentration, the values in the figure are smaller by tenfold or a hundredfold. This reduction may be qualitatively ascribed to charged repulsion. [Pg.512]

Mission Deep Impact In July 2005, NASA steered a projectile, about 370 kg in weight, at the comet 9F/Tempel (dimensions 4x4x14km), in order to obtain more exact information on its structure and composition. The impact was visible from Earth the Rosetta spacecraft discussed above also sent pictures to Earth. The dust/ice ratio determined after the impact is very probably greater than unity, so that comets are probably icy dustballs rather than (as had previously been surmised) dirty snowballs . The density of the cometary nucleus, which seems to consist of porous material, is roughly equal to that of ice. The impact set free around 19 GJ of... [Pg.64]
