Tears, Cholesterol

Rabbit Tear Cholesterol by Gas-Liquid Chromatography J. Chromatogr. 146(2) 321-326 (1978) CA 89 193310V... [Pg.217]

The lipid layer, which consists of cholesterol esters, phospholipids, and triglycerides, prevents and regulates aqueous evaporation from the tear film. [Pg.469]

Lipid metabolism. Oil, administered orally to female C57BL/6 mice weaned at 21 d of age at a dose of 15% w/w for 6 weeks, increased the total lipids, triglycerides, LDL and VLDL cholesterol, and thioharhituric acid-reactive substances (TEARS) and reduced glutathione concentrations, without changes in phospholipids or total cho-... [Pg.137]

Stability of beef patties during storage (formation of TEARS, WOF, hydroperoxides, hexanal and cholesterol 7-oxides)... [Pg.323]

Positioned at the interface between the air and tear film, the lipid layer is produced by the meibomian glands with contributions from the glands of Zeis and Moll. Most of this layer consists of low-polarity lipids, such as wax and cholesterol esters, with traces of triglycerides. A thin polar portion, adjacent to the tear-aqueous layer, may contain surfactant phospholipids needed to spread lipid film over aqueous layers. The main purpose of the lipid layer appears to be to reduce evaporation of the tear film. [Pg.263]

Oxidized cholesterol has been shown to possess potent atherogenic properties (9,10). The specific proatherogenic properties of oxidized LDL are now established (11-13). Studies involving CLA in the cancer field have suggested that it might have antioxidant properties (14,15). In our first study (1), when we examined the sera of the control and test rabbits, we found no differences in serum levels of ihiobarbituric acid reactive (TEARS) substances. Thus, the two variables that immediately come to mind when one considers atherogenesis do not differ in control or CLA-fed rabbits. [Pg.306]
