Teachings, fragmentation

In research and teaching, the problem of alienation and fragmentation is not new, but it is becoming increasingly severe. It has not received the attention that it deserves, indeed that it must have, to reduce the gulf between science and engineering.

New methods are focused on the preparation of solid catalysts without release of gaseous or liquid waste streams. In zeolite synthesis, the chemical compounds generated during combustion of templates (structure-directing agent) are often hazardous and harmful to the environment. A new method teaches disassembling the template within zeolite pore space into small fragments without combustion. ... 

Because the Bloch simulator is based on a classical approach rather than a quantum mechanical approach to the NMR phenomena its use in analysing pulse sequence fragments is somewhat restricted. Nevertheless, as will be illustrated in the next three examples, in spite of these restrictions the Bloch simulator is a very powerful aid in visualizing what is happening in a pulse sequence fragment and consequently is an extremely valuable teaching and research tool.

Probably from this period, between about 1704 and 1709, there survives a manuscript fragment of a lecture by Keill on chemistry, titled De operationum chymicarum ratione mechanica. As the title indicates, the lecture focused on the mechanical philosophy, by which the Operations of Chymistry are explained. In style and format, this lecture seems to have been intended to fit into Keill s natural philosophy course. Like earlier lecturers on the topic, Keill emphasized the performance of specific chemical operations, rather than using chemistry as a basis for a wider theoretical discussion of the nature of matter. However, he did not place these operations in the usual medical context, but discussed industrial uses. This lecture therefore represents an attempt to place the teaching of chemistry in a new context.
