Tantalum chalcogenides

Although not yet published in a journal, according to thesis work, the vanadium compounds VSCl (11), VSBr, and VSI (208) seem to exist. Numerous niobium chalcogenide halides have been reported, and among these are the best characterized examples of Group VB (see Table X). Only two tantalum compounds, TaSjCU (361) and TaSCls (13) have thus far been described in the literature.

The sulfido, seleno and telluro halides of the transition metals have been reviewed recently.540"542 Numerous Nb11 chalcogenide halides have been reported. For tantalum, only [Ta(S2)Cl2] and [Ta(S2)mCl ] (m = 1-3, n = 1-4), of unknown structure, obtained from TaCls and S8, have so far been reported.543...

In spite of such limitations, ceramic techniques have been widely used for the synthesis of solid materials. Mention must be made, among others, of the use of this technique for the synthesis of rare earth mono-chalcogenides such as SmS and SmSe. The method involves heating the elements, first at lower temperatures (870-1170 K) in evacuated silica tubes the contents are then homogenized, sealed in tantalum tubes and heated to around 2300 K by passing a high current through the tube [15].
