The film-coating process can be carried out in conventional pans, although operation variables such as speed of pan rotation, angle of pan axis, and temperature and humidity control may be more critical. Newer pans with one-way air flow through the tablet bed offer an even better alternative, because the pan environment can be controlled within finer limits. 

In previous work, the formula used were optimized by direct compression [13]. The area under the dissolution curve was optimized and validated by a composite design. However, the formulation gave poor powder flow as well as variability in the dissolution parameters. Thus the double compression process was investigated in order to change the powder into solid aggregates and therefore to enhance homogeneity, density and powder flow in addition it was expected that this process would reduce the variability between tablets. 

The rate of tlie compaction process is another variable that should be considered throughout development, including scale-up. Typically, the development of a tablet formulation takes place on tablet presses that are relatively slow. The tableting rate is important to consider for several reasons. Blend flow is important to ensure bulk blend transfer into the tablet press (hopper) and consistent die fiU. Variation or difficulty in the bulk flow and die fill can contribute to tablet weight variation. As the compaction rate increases, the blended material must be able to... 

Thus, direct-compression tableting requires careful attention to the choice of excipients, appropriate flow properties, and blend homogeneity, and to the interplay of formulation and process variables that can affect both compactibility and drug dissolution.
