The object of this article is to discuss all known aspects of the chemistry and biochemistry of this new class of nucleosides, emphasizing the advantages of using them as synthetic intermediates, and also as models for biological studies. 

This review has a similar format to that found in the earlier Chapters in this series although there are some rearrangements in the order of presentation of the material. The present authors considered it impossible to provide a thorough summary of the recent studies into the biosynthesis (and inhibition of biosynthesis], metabolism, biochemistry and pharmacology of PGs and TXs. Hence we have mentioned the aspects of these topics which are of particular relevance to the synthetic chemist, and listed the authoritative reviews that have appeared recently which discuss the biological roles of PGs and TXs in more detail.
