A solution of (—)-(2/ ,4/ ,5S)-3,4-dimethyl-2,5-diphenyl-1,3,2-oxaza-phospholidine-2-oxide (10.0 g, 34.8 mmol) in dry THF (150 ml) is stirred at -30° under an inert atmosphere as 2-methoxyphenylmagnesium bromide (0.5 m in THF, 100 ml, 50 mmol) is added via a cannula. The mixture is stirred at -30° for 1 h and at room temperature for 18 h. Water (100 ml) is added cautiously, and the resulting mixture is extracted with dichloromethane (3 x 100 ml). The combined extracts are dried (MgSOJ and concentrated. The white solid thus obtained is recrystallized from toluene (two crops) to give the title compound (9.6 g, 70%), m.p. 195-197°, [a]R21 -14.8°(c = 1.0, CHClj).
