As with imipramine, it is used for depression of various etiology. In terms of efficacy, it is analogous to imipramine. Surmontil is a synonym of trimipramine. [Pg.105]

Seven TCA drugs are available in the United States for treatment of major depression. They are generally categorized as tertiary or secondary amines. Tertiary amines include imipramine (Tofranil), amitriptyline (Elavil), trimipramine (Surmontil), and doxepin (5m-equan). Desipramine (Norpramin), nortriptyline (Pam-elor), and protriptyline (Vivactil) are secondary amines. [Pg.389]

The tricyclic antidepressants have a three-ring nucleus and are norepinephrine and serotonin reuptake inhibitors. They have been used for decades. Trade names included in this group of drugs as of 2002 are Etrafon, Limbitrol, Norpramin, Sinequan, Surmontil, and Vivactil. [Pg.54]

Antidepressants. Although not specifically indicated to treat insomnia, antidepressant compounds are often used for their sedating properties, particularly when coexisting depression or anxiety are present. Newer antidepressants that often help with insomnia include trazodone (Desyrel) nefazodone (Serzone) mir-tazapine (Remeron) amytriptyline (Elavil) trim-ipramine (Surmontil) and doxepin (Sinequan). [Pg.468]
