Both mechanical and chemical action promote ink detachment from cellulose fibers during pulping. Mechanical action includes interfiber abrasion and fiber flexing and bending. Chemical action includes fiber swelling and surfactant-promoted ink particle emulsification and solubilization. 

In the case of crystalline polymers it may be that solvents can cause cracking by activity in the amorphous zone. Examples of this are benzene and toluene with polyethylene. In polyethylene, however, the greater problem is that known as environmental stress cracking , which occurs with materials such as soap, alcohols, surfactants and silicone oils. Many of these are highly polar materials which cause no swelling but are simply absorbed either into or on to the polymer. This appears to weaken the surface and allows cracks to propagate from minute flaws. 

The effect of surfactant structures and properties on emulsion polymerization have been investigated by numerous authors [82-89]. Efforts were made to study the effects of surfactants with different molecular weights on the rate of polymerization [82], swelling and solubilization effects [83], effects of alkyl chain length of homologous series on the rate of polymerization, particle size... 

Various bacterial species have proven useful in MEOR. The principle is based on the species biochemical byproducts produced, such as gases, surfactants, solvents, acids, swelling agents, and cosurfactants, which facilitate the displacement of oil. In field experiments, in situ fermentation is often desirable for producing a great quantity of gases. Clostridium hydrosulfuricum 39E was found to have surface-active properties during simulated enhanced oil recovery experiments [1874].
