Surface treatment particleboard

After a discussion of mechanisms for the liberation and subsequent emission of formaldehyde from particleboard, methods to assess the extent of these processes are described. Data are presented for the formaldehyde emission from particleboard with various surface treatments. These data were obtained by a laboratory method and by large climate chamber measurements and show that some of the surface treatments studied constitute very efficient diffusion barriers and considerably reduce the formaldehyde emission rate. [Pg.202]

A small amount of particleboard is made with a fire-retardant treatment for use in locations where codes require this material, as in some offices and elevators. Particleboards receive overlay and finishing treatments with ease. Wood veneers, melamine overlays, printed paper overlays, vinyl overlays, foils, and direct grain printing can all be done quite simply. A small amount of particleboard is also made in the form of shaped, molded articles such as furniture parts, paper roU plugs, bmsh bases, and even toilet seats. There is another small increment of particleboard made by the extmsion process. These products are made in small captive operations owned by furniture manufacturers which consume all of this production in their furniture. The extmsion process differs from conventional flat-pressed particleboard in that the wood furnish is forced between two stationary heated surfaces. The mats are formed from one edge and this edge is alternately formed and pushed between the heated platens, which are maintained at a distance equal to the thickness of board produced. This is an old, slow, small-scale process, but is stiU in use in at least one location. [Pg.393]

The most common resin for lignocellulosic composites is urea formaldehyde. About 90% of all lignocellulosic composite panel products are bonded with UF [12]. UF is inexpensive, reacts quickly when the composite is hot-pressed, and is easy to use. UF is water-resistant, but not waterproof. As such, its use is limited to interior applications unless special treatments or coatings are applied. UF resins are typically used in the manufacture of products where dimensional uniformity and surface smoothness are of primary concern, for example, particleboard and medium density fibreboard (MDF). Products manufactured with UF resins are designed for interior applications. They can be formulated to cure anywhere from room temperature to 150 °C press times and temperatures can be moderated accordingly. UF resins (often referred to as urea resins) are more economical than PF resins and are the most widely used adhesive for composite wood products. The inherently light colour of UF resins make them quite suitable for the manufacture of decorative products. [Pg.355]
