This example not only highlights the effect of noncovalent ligand binding on association (and catalysis) but also the role played by covalent phosphorylation and dephosphorylation of selected residues (serine, threonine and tyrosine) in proteins. Phosphorylation/dephosphorylation is an extremely important regulator of the assembly, disassembly and other dynamic properties of many supramolecular structures. 

After Breit and Seiche (67) had reported hydroformylation catalysts containing rhodium and bidentate ligands assembled via hydrogen bonding, Dubrovina and Boerner (68) pointed out that the first use of bidentate ligands obtained via hydrogen bonding in catalysis is represented by the supramolecular work on SPO platinum complexes. 

In contrast to unmodified pincer ligands, comparatively few examples of pincer ligand frameworks appended with polar functionaHty have been reported. The overarching goals associated with such modifications are diverse and span the fields of catalysis, supramolecular assembly, and molecular recognition.
