Summary of Design Steps

The following steps are used in designing a shell and tube heat exchanger  

The required heat duty Q q is usually fixed by the required service and the designed heat exchanger has to meet or exceed this requirement. 

Select the streams that should be placed on the tube side and shell side. 

Calculate the heat transfer area required using a reasonable guess for the overall heat transfer coefficient. 

Select suitable tube specifications (OD/ID/Ptand length).
