Sulphur and its Binary Compounds

Mix finely ground S with iron filings and heat in a small crucible. When the two powders react, cool the product and grind to a fine powder. Sprinkle some on a paper placed over a bar magnet. Add dil. HCI to the remainder in a test tube and expose a moist lead acetate paper at the mouth of the tube. 

To a little sulphur, add 1 cm fuming sulphuric acid, warm and shake.  

Boil some sulphur with NaOH solution. When dissolved, add to separate portions (i) silver nitrate solution, (ii) sodium nitroprusside solution (Nitrosylpentacyanoferrate (II)).
