Sulphoxide complexes

Sulphide and sulphoxide complexes have been extensively studied since cis-RuC12(DMSO)4 (DMSO, dimethyl sulphoxide, (Me)2SO) was found to have anti-tumour properties and to be a precessor for radiosensitizing agents. Such complexes can act as catalysts for the oxidation of sulphides with molecular oxygen. 

Ruthenium(III) sulphoxide complexes were less well authenticated until recently [111] some syntheses are found in Figure 1.41. 

Carbonyl derivatives of ruthenium sulphoxide complexes have been made [113]. 

RuCl3(DMSO)3 reacts with sulphides to form mixed sulphide/sulphoxide complexes that are catalysts for oxidation of thioethers to sulphoxides [114a] ... 

Relative differences between S 2p3/2 and O 1 s ionization potentials show a characteristic separation for oxygen-bound and sulphur-bound sulphoxides. It is clearly shown in Table 20 that sulphur-bound complexes have (O 1 s-S 2p3/2) relative shifts of 365.0 eV, while oxygen-bound complexes have relative shifts of 365.8 eV. Infrared and X-ray crystallographic results also show that most neutral platinum and palladium dialkyl sulphoxide complexes contain metal-sulphur rather than metal-oxygen bonds, while first-row transition metals favour oxygen-bonded sulphoxide.
