Complexes Containing Chiral Sulfoxides. The blue solutions obtained by refluxing RuCl3 3H20 in polar solvents under H2 have provided a useful route to Ru(II) complexes (43,44). As described in the experimental section, treatment of such methanolic solutions with monodentate sulfoxides (Rudigand = 1 2) yielded the trimeric [RuC L ta species (where L = chiral ligands MBMSO and MPTSO) and a polymeric complex [RuC L ln (where L is racemic methyl phenyl sulfoxide). 

Ferrocenylmethylamine also functions as a chelating bidentate ligand, and the cyclometallated platinum complex contains a planar chirality. The complex with the cyclometallated (7V,A-dimethylamino)methylferrocene and methyl phenyl sulfoxide ligands 469 is obtained as a mixture of the two diastereomers having the planar chirality and chiral sulfur atom. ... 

The most efficient way to generate optically active sulfoxides is via enantiose-lective catalysis [10,11]. For this purpose enzymes and metal catalysts can be used. In this chapter, the various approaches to metal-catalyzed formation of sulfoxides based on oxidation chemistry are described. All of these methods rely on chiral transition metal complexes and, therefore, special focus will be given to a discussion of the structures of these metal-containing compounds. 

Ruthenium-salen complex 263 was examined. Achiral salen complex 263 in the presence of chiral sulfoxide 264 progressed the cyclopropanation of diazoacetate in a highly enantioselective manner (Scheme 1.127) [184]. Chiral sulfoxide served as an axial ligand that showed good asymmetric induction. C2-symmetric chiral ruthenium-salen complex 265 contained in metal-organic frameworks worked as a chiral catalyst for cyclopropanation (Scheme 1.128) [185].
