Sugar sulfates acid hydrolysis

This sugar was first prepared by Irvine and Moodie48 by the methyla-tion of methyl a-D-mannopyranoside with methyl iodide and silver oxide in the presence of methanol as solvent. The crystalline methyl tetra-methyl-a-D-mannoside yielded, on acid hydrolysis, sirupy 2,3,4,6-tetra-methyl-D-mannose. Methylation has been carried out subsequently using dimethyl sulfate and sodium hydroxide49 60 and by the reaction of the potassium salt of methyl a-D-mannopyranoside with methyl iodide in liquid ammonia.61 The Haworth methylation procedure has also been... [Pg.228]

More difficulty was encountered with the pyrimidine deoxynucleosides. It was tacitly assumed that the sugar radical in thymidine and deoxy-cytidine, by analogy with the ribonucleosides, is attached to position Nl. The first significant experiment111 to shed some light upon the validity of this assumption was based upon the methylation studies of Levene and Tipson.108 Deoxyribonucleic acid from thymus was methylated with dimethyl sulfate plus alkali, and the product was degraded by strong-acid hydrolysis. One of the products obtained was 3-methylthymine (XI).111 A... [Pg.301]
