HydroxycarbazoIes react with citral to form either pyrano[3,2-a]carbazoles (132) or pyrano[2,3]carbazoles (133), whilst 1-hydroxycarbazoles produce pyrano[2,3-a]-carbazoles (81SC823, 81H(16)1445). Other cyclization reactions involving substituted pyrroles or indoles and aldehydes or ketones in which the substituent becomes part of the new ring system are discussed under the relevant sections relating to the reactivity of the substituent. [Pg.235]

Polyphenylene oxide, or polyphenylene ether, is an amorphous polymer for which the IR and Raman spectra are presented in Reference Spectrum 45. As expected from the chemical structure, bands relevant to the aromatic ring system are observed at 1601, 1492, and 858 cm (IR), and 1603 and 835 cm (Raman)—the low-frequency band in the IR being associated with the substitution of the aromatic ring. The other important feature of the IR spectrum of polyphenylene oxide is the intense absorption band at 1188 cm associated with the ether bonding. [Pg.270]

Two relevant reviews, on meso-ionic ring systems and on selenium-nitrogen heterocycles, have been published and a three-part volume on Thiazole and Its Derivatives has appeared. Parts 1 and 2 of this volume are concerned with the chemistry of thiazole and substituted thiazoles, and the third part contains chapters on meso-ionic compounds, on cyanine dyes, and on selenazoles. [Pg.271]

In an electrocyclic reaction (Woodward and Hoffmann, 1970) a molecule with a conjugated system of mw electrons cyclizes to form a ring ofm—2w electrons and one a bond. Forthis transformation to happen, the two ends of the relevant w system must approach each other in such a way as to enable the end p orbitals to overlap constmctively. To form a a bond the two terminal p orbitals need to rotate. When the molecule is substituted the rotations can be in the same or in opposite directions. This leads to different stereoisomers and is of much interest to physical organic chemists. Therefore, such reactions are extensively studied. They are a special case of a pericyclic isomerization where the transition state is cyclic. [Pg.344]

The most relevant results regarding the SRN1 substitutions have been extensively reviewed [1-5] consequently, in this chapter we indude only the most recent and major representative synthetic examples in the aromatic system, relating to C—C and C-heteroatom bond formation with sulfur and tin nudeophiles, and ring-dosure reactions. [Pg.320]

The substituted triazine, a dye, shown in Figure 8, undergoes internal rotation of the substituents about the triazine ring. This is reflected in the H NMR variable-temperature spectra of the H(3 )H(5 )H(6 ) system, an analysis of which has been performed by Birkett et al for the H3 proton only yielding the relevant four- and five-bond proton-proton couplings.
