4 Substances controlled by inclusion on Aquatic Pollution lists [Pg.121]

In Europe, a reference list has been developed by water pollution directives and by the impact of international pollution conventions. A detailed description of this development is given in reference [2]. [Pg.121]

The list (see Appendix 6.1) contains 170 substances said to have the potential to cause significant water pollution. The majority are not solvents. The important solvents included on the list are the major chlorinated hydrocarbons toluene ortho, meta and para xylenes ethyl benzene and some long chain aliphatics (C8 upwards). Pollution authorities in EU member states refer to this list in setting their own national lists for control. [Pg.121]

Many of the materials will be subject to national controls in EU member states and elsewhere. If a nationally listed solvent or a preparation containing one may appear in a discharge, discussions should be held with the pollution authority to obtain approval or an assurance that none is required.
