Figure 9.45 incorporates all the desirable features listed above. The net accumulation of water overflows from a submerged outlet through a seal leg. With the arrangement shown, it is also possible to pump the water away under level control. If the central pan idea is not adopted, the overflow seal leg is positioned to maintain the proper seal depth automatically.

The general layout of the reactor core and pressure vessel is shown in Fig. 11.3. Unlike the DFR, the reactor is of the pool type, the core and the primary circuit sodium pumps and heat exchangers all being submerged in liquid sodium within a stainless steel pressure vessel of diameter 12.2 m and depth 15.2 m. The pressure vessel is suspended by its periphery from the concrete roof structure. All the main components of the primary circuit are likewise suspended from the roof and all connections are routed through it.

(1977) recommend a down-pumping 45° pitched blade impeller in a vessel with a single baffle whose width is one-fifth the impeller diameter submerged to a depth of one-third the impeller diameter to produce a noncentral vortex.
