The resolution of a conventional microcope is limited by the classical phenomena of interference and diffraction. The limit is approximately X/2, X being the wavelength. This limit can be overcome by using a sub-wavelength light source and by placing the sample very close to this source (i.e. in the near field). The relevant domain is near-field optics (as opposed to far-field conventional optics), which has been applied to microscopy, spectroscopy and optical sensors. In particular, nearfield scanning optical microscopy (N SOM) has proved to be a powerful tool in physical, chemical and life sciences (Dunn, 1999). [Pg.356]

Although the physical thickness of the liquid crystal is only about 15 Angstrom, it is quantum-mechanically resonant at the wavelength of the incident photons due to its slow-wave electronic structure. The spatial profile of the anisotropic absorption spectrum is shown without dimensions. It is dependent on the absorption cross section of the liquid crystalline film. The array factor for this array cannot be determined easily using conventional antenna theory because of its sub-wavelength dimensions and other currently unknown parameters. [Pg.61]

Over the last several years, many groups have described the use of metallic surfaces and sub-wavelength sized metallic nanoparticles to modify both the far and near-field emissive prr rties of optically excited fluorophores, a technology named... [Pg.439]

The purpose of this chapter is to overview some of the key results in fluorescence emission from sub-wavelength metal apertures, both single apertures and in array arrangements. While a comprehensive theory is currently lacking, sufficient understanding can be obtained from computational models to qualitatively describe experimental results. [Pg.489]
