Styrene p-sulfonamide

The false monomeric unit content can often be determined by spectroscopic procedures, such as infrared or nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. In the special cases of acrylamide or styrene p-sulfonamide polymers, it can be determined by hydrolysis as well. Polymers for which no monomer corresponding to the actual monomeric unit exists are called phantom or exotic polymers. [Pg.39]

The addition polymerization of monomers is often less straightforward, since on the one hand the structure of the monomeric unit can alter under certain circumstances, and on the other hand, head-to-head or tail-to-tail structures are possible. For example, under the action of strong bases, acrylamide does not yield poly(acrylamide), but isomerizes to give poly-(j8-alanine). Styrene-p-sulfonamide behaves similarly ... [Pg.52]
