In blends composed of immiscible polymers, amorphous polymer does not affect the crystallization of crystallizable polymer, but if two polymers are miscible, amorphous polymer acts as diluent and affects crystallization of the second polymer. An important industrial example of W/O emulsions arises in water-in-crude-oil emulsions that form during production. These emulsions must be broken to aid transportation and refining [43]. These suspensions have been extensively studied by Sjoblom and co-workers [10, 13, 14] and Wasan and co-workers [44]. Clusters are intennediates bridging the properties of the atoms and the bulk. They can be viewed as novel molecules, but different from ordinary molecules, in that they can have various compositions and multiple shapes. Bare clusters are usually quite reactive and unstable against aggregation and have to be studied in vacuum or inert matrices. Interest in clusters comes from a wide range of fields. Clusters are used as models to investigate surface and bulk properties [2]. Since most catalysts are dispersed metal particles [3], isolated clusters provide ideal systems to understand catalytic mechanisms. The versatility of their shapes and compositions make clusters novel molecular systems to extend our concept of chemical bonding, stmcture and dynamics. Stable clusters or passivated clusters can be used as building blocks for new materials or new electronic devices [4] and this aspect has now led to a whole new direction of research into nanoparticles and quantum dots (see chapter C2.17). As the size of electronic devices approaches ever smaller dimensions [5], the new chemical and physical properties of clusters will be relevant to the future of the electronics industry. [Pg.2388]

Dichromated Resists. The first compositions widely used as photoresists combine a photosensitive dichromate salt (usually ammonium dichromate) with a water-soluble polymer of biologic origin such as gelatin, egg albumin (proteins), or gum arabic (a starch). Later, synthetic polymers such as poly(vinyl alcohol) also were used (11,12). Irradiation with uv light (X in the range of 360—380 nm using, for example, a carbon arc lamp) leads to photoinitiated oxidation of the polymer and reduction of dichromate to Ct(III). The photoinduced chemistry renders exposed areas insoluble in aqueous developing solutions. The photochemical mechanism of dichromate sensitization of PVA (summarized in Fig. 3) has been studied in detail (13). [Pg.115]

Monomer compositional drifts may also occur due to preferential solution of the styrene in the mbber phase or solution of the acrylonitrile in the aqueous phase (72). Chromium-containing wood preservatives and their chemical compositions are Hsted ia Table 13 (199). Chromium compounds have a triple function ia wood preservation (200). Most importantiy, after impregnation of the wood the Cr(VI) compounds used ia the formulations react with the wood extractives and the other preservative salts to produce relatively insoluble complexes from which preservative leaches only very slowly.
