The uptake of exogenous choline for PC synthesis is accepted (31,32), although the nature of transport is contentious (33,34). The disparate observations are perhaps due to variance in experimental technique age of the erythrocytes employed cation imbalance reaction termination conditions in vitro choline concentration and innate characteristics of the two Plasmodium species examined (33,34). In this section a few examples are given of natural and artificial changes in growth conditions which can affect phospholipid biosynthesis. The suitability of plant tissue for such manipulations may make it particularly useful for the study of regulation of phospholipid biosynthesis.

The first attempts to apply the operon model to systems regulating hemoglobin synthesis were made by Neel (1961) and Wheeler and Krevans (1961a).
