Student, perpetual

The course instructors or professors have not tried to intentionally deceive their students. Most individuals cannot grasp the full depth and detail of any chemical concept the first time that it is presented to them. It has been found that most people learn complex subjects best when first given a basic description of the concepts and then left to develop a more detailed understanding over time. Despite the best elforts of educators, a few misconceptions are at times possibly introduced in the attempt to simplify complex material for freshmen students. The part of this process that perpetuates any confusion is the fact that texts and instructors alike often do not acknowledge the simplifications being presented. 

In another of the student magazines, The Mermaid, an account is given in 1909-1910 of the new woman chemistry student The modern Chemistry Girl in the smart, brand-new Lab is, you may be sure, quite up-to-date, and, if the truth be known, a source of perpetual worry to most of the rather dull men, who have uneasy visions of their names on the terminal lists preceded by those of a whole string of young girls. 91... 

Why then do so few college students pursue degrees in science Mostly, it is because they are turned away by parents, advisors, and even teachers, who have blocked out science from their own lives earlier and then advise the youngsters to do the same. They say science is too hard. The attitude is if you have trouble with your backhand in tennis use a forehand shot all the time. This attitude does not work in today s world. So why are the parents, teachers, and advisors so ignorant in science Because they, too, were advised to shy away from it by their parents and teachers, and so on. It is a self-perpetuating delusion, and we must all work to overcome it. 

New techniques to illustrate basic chemical principles are valuable tools for the chemistry teacher, regardless of the level of instruction. The use of laboratory exercises exposes students to direct applications of these principles. Because chemistry encompasses a wide variety of fields, the traditional bench experiments approach is no longer the only avenue by which to introduce new concepts. Furthermore, the perpetuation of traditional labs can make the subject uninteresting... 

Most importantly, it must be appreciated that what experienced geologists are willing to accept on the basis of incomplete and disparate exposures, may do more to perpetuate the mysteries of geology for a student than to clarify them. 

Alfliough a strong effort has been made over the past decades to avoid sexism in education and science, a solid image of science as a masculine job is still pervasive (Calloni, 2009). It seems fliatthe hidden curriculum creates a scientific bias between women and men and perpetuates the transmission of stereotypes, often involuntarily, to students. This kind of process has a negative impact on the lives of both women and men and on society as a whole. 

However, the questions they ask those they serve and themselves, based on their knowledge, skill, and experience, are more important than the answers they give. Once key questions are asked, the consultant knows how to find the answers. The successful consultant is a perpetual student, or to use Chapter 1 terminology, always a student. The consultant is strongly oriented toward trying to find out more about his or her area of expertise, the current task or project, and the organization he or she is serving. Clearly, the consultant s inquisitiveness spans technical and non-technical subjects and topics.
