Structure trivial names and Strukturbericht symbols As a conclusion to the presentation of the rational nomenclature and symbolism of the intermetallic phases, it must be mentioned that a number of trivial names and symbols have been used and, due to historical reasons, are still in use both as indicators of a single phase in specific systems, or as descriptors of certain structural types or of families of different interrelated structural types. 

The Strukturbericht symbols, which in some cases are still used (see Appendix) have generally also been included, and illustrative short lists of phases pertaining to each prototype have often been added. 

Structure types are often distinguished in terms of their Strukturbericht symbols. Frequently encountered are A1 - Cu A2 - W A3 - Mg B1 - NaCl B2 - CsCl B3 - ZnS (F43m).

There are four copper atoms in the unit cell, (Figure 1.7). Besides some metals, the noble gases, Ne(s), Ar(s), Kr(s), Xe(s), also adopt this structure in the solid state. This structure is often called the face-centred cubic (fee) structure or the cubic close-packed (cep) structure, but the Strukturbericht symbol, Al is the most compact notation. Each atom has 12 nearest neighbours, and if the atoms are supposed to be hard touching spheres, the fraction of the volume occupied is...
