Structures, Bonding, and Exchange Reactions

Donor molecules such as piperidine are capable of splitting the chlorine bridge bonds in the dimers of Et2AlCl in benzene solution. n.m.r. spectroscopy was used to investigate this process with piperidine, diethylether, pyridine, and pyrrol.  

Aluminium trichloride forms interesting -bonded complexes with various cyclobutadiene compounds. Evidence from a study of the n.m.r. spectra of compounds such as (18) and (19) indicated that these are fluxional molecules in which the (AlClg)- moiety moves about the four-membered ring in a series of
