2 Structure of Citrobacter freundii Class C Beta-Lactamase 

The starting point for inhibitor design was the solution of the crystal structure of Citrobacter freundii 1203 beta-lacteunase at 2.0 A [6]. An overview of the structure is shown in Fig. 2. The active site of this enzyme is located in the center at the interface of two domains, left and right, both of which contribute catalytic residues. 

In order to elucidate the mechanism of action of this enzyme in detail, penicillin G was selected as a model substrate for natural beta-lactams, such as penicillins and cephalosporins.
