Bicelles are model membranes generally made of long-chain DMPC and short-chain DHPC. Lipid concentration and molar ratio boundaries for the use of isotropic bicelles and are extensively used to study membrane interactions and structure determination of membrane-associated peptides. " By using bicelles and lipid liposomes Furlan et al have shown that red wine tannins make more fluid and precipitate lipid liposomes and bicelles, suggesting interactions of tannins with membrane lipids. [Pg.416]

Abstract Recently, the interest on biomaterials and especially in tannins was growing and some attractive results were obtained in the adsorption of some metals by tannin adsorbents. Tannins are widely distributed in nature and have multiple adjacent polyhydroxyphenyl groups in their chemical structure which have extremely high afiSnity for heavy metal ions. This study will describe how tannin can be used as an effective zinc and lead sorbent by the use of tannin resins. Batch method was used in the experiments in which pH profde, adsorption time, adsorbent/liquid ratios, initial concentration of metal ions, adsorbent amount and temperature were investigated to determine binding properties of adsorbent for the Zn(II) and Pb(ll) ions. [Pg.253]

The tannin in plant samples, grapes or wine for example, is a mixture of flavolans of varying structures which determine the properties of the tannin. Consequently, to be positive about the tannin in a sample, two tests should be made (a) total tannin and (b) amount of polymerization or the proportions of the different flavolans. [Pg.74]

Selection of the End-Joint Profile. Because the purpose of this work was to determine whether a portion of the phenol-resorcinol-formaldehyde adhesive used in structural end-joints could be replaced by tannin extracts from southern pine bark, it was necessary to use a structural end-joint profile design. The profile chosen was the design used by many U.S. plants for the manufacture of structural end-joints. A reproduction in natural size with a drawing showing the exact dimensions is shown in Figure 1. [Pg.207]

The tannins of fodder legumes have also been studied in some detail by Foo et al. (63), who determined the structures of the proanthocyanidins from 13 species in the genera Coronilla, Lotus, Onobrychis, Robinia, Trifolium, and Vida. All were mixed procyanidin-prodelphinidin polymers except Trifolium repens (a prodelphinidin) and Vida (a procyanidin). [Pg.990]
