Glucopiericidins A and B (40a,b) were isolated from the culture broth of Streptomyces pactum. Their structures were determined by elemental analysis, MS, lH and l C NMR, and acid hydrolysis to produce D-glucose [147]. 

Piericidins are insecticidal compounds isolated from mycelia of Streptomyces mobaraensis and Streptomyces pactum. They are toxic to several species of insects, aphids, and mites. Piericidin A is known to block electron transport between NADH dehydrogenase and coenzyme Q. In the course of our screening for phosphatidyl-inositol turnover inhibitors, we isolated the novel antibiotics piericidin W-oxide (29), as well as B5 and B5 N-oxide (30), from Streptomyces (Fig. 17). 

Many metabolites of the actinomycetes are biosynthesized through the polyketide biosynthetic pathway. For example, it was clarified that the pieri-cidins, isolated from the fermentation broth of Streptomyces pactum and possessing a pyridine nucleus, are produced through the polyketide pathway, as is nigrifactin. The biosynthetic pathway was clarified by stable isotope feeding experiments [5]. Piericidin Aj, the first piericidin derivative, was obtained as an insecticide [6] and the chemical structure, including the absolute configuration, was reported [7]. Other piericidin derivatives, pieri-cidins A2-A4, B1-B4, C1-C4, and D1-D4, were also isolated [8].
