Streptococcus hemolyticus

It is used topically extensively for the superficial conjunctival infections and blepharitis essentially caused by coli, H. influenzae, Moraxella lacunata, Streptococcus hemolyticus, andS aureus. However, it is still the drug of choice for the typhoid fever. [Pg.770]

The sequence of reactions by which the amino sugar is incorporated into polysaccharides is not clear. It is not known whether a phosphorylated compound is essential to this synthesis. Hexokinase does not appear to phosphorylate JV-acetylglucosamine. In studies on the biosynthesis of hyaluronic acid by Streptococcus hemolyticus, glucose-l-C was added to the medium. Glucosamine was isolated from the synthesized polysaccharide, and the major fraction of the radioactivity of the compound was present in Ci. This experiment suggests that the glucosamine moiety of hyaluronic acid arises from glucose. ... [Pg.231]

A close connexion between the requirements of the organism for adenylic acid and the CO2 tension was also found (see Section X,4 and Table XXV). In general, suitable pressures of CO2 could off-set lack of adenylic acid and to some extent lack of pyridoxin with Streptococcus hemolyticus C 2035, and decreased oxygen pressure (anaerobiosis) also decreased the adenylic acid effect. Further investigation of these extremely interesting relations between pyridoxin, adenylic acid, oxygen, and carbon dioxide may provide clues to the metabolic roles of both pyridoxin and carbon dioxide in bacterial growth, both of which are at present obscure. [Pg.141]
