Streamside salamander

Moore, R. D., Newton, B., and Sih, A., 1996, Delayed hatching as a response of streamside salamander eggs to chemical cues from predatory sunfish, Oikos 77 331-335. [Pg.347]

In response to larval predators we tend to see a delay in hatching time. Sih and Moore (1993) exposed streamside salamander embryos Ambystoma barbouri) to chemical cues from flatworms Phagocotus gracilis) or non-predatory isopods (Lirceus fontinalis). Embryos tended delay hatching in response to flatworm cues, but not to isopod cues. Moreover, hatchlings tended to be larger and more developed than control hatchlings. [Pg.375]
