Strategies of Enzymatic Synthesis

The enzymatic synthesis of SSpLA can be conducted under thermodynamic (Ferndndez-Lafuente et al. 1996a Nierstrasz et al. 1999 Schroen et al. 1999) or kinetic control (Herndndez-Justiz et al. 1999 Schroen et al. 2001a). 

As a consequence of several developments both in the field of biocatalyst and medium engineering, the enzymatic production of SSpLA by KCS is becoming increasingly competitive with current chemical processes. As a token, an industrial facility for producing cephalexin by a totally enzymatic process has entered into operation recently (Janssen 2006) reduction of 50 to 15 kg waste/kg product is a major factor for success (Gavrilescu and Chisti 2005). Because of its relevance, KCS of SSpLA will be analyzed in depth in section 6.2.5.
