Stored Materials and Containers

Preventing exposure of personnel to toxic substances is of primary concern. These substances can be gaseous, liquid, or solid. They can enter the impro-tected body by inhalation, skin absorption, ingestion, or contact with a woimd. Effects can be at the point of contact or systemic, and they can be acute or chronic. Acute exposures result in symptoms immediately or shortly after exposure. Chronic exposures can produce long-term effects, which vary with the substance, its concentration, and the number and duration of exposures. [Pg.202]

Toxic effects may be temporary and reversible, permanent and disabling, or lethal. Exposures can produce obvious symptoms (e.g., burning, coughing, nausea, rashes), but even without such symptoms, an exposure can produce toxic effects. [Pg.202]
