Sir Nicholas Stern, former chief economist at the World Bank, estimated that by 2020 the cost of continued reliance on fossil fuels will reach 20% of the gross world product (GWP), which today is approaching 50 trillion. Naturally, in addition to the economic cost of inaction ( 10 trillion/yr by 2020), there are social, environmental, and "energy war" costs.
