Steered arc

If the arc is confined and caused to move over the surface in a particular path, the source is called a steered arc source. There are a number of different steered arc source designs which use magnetic fields to steer the arc. Steered arc sources generally produce fewer macros than do random arc sources.

Arc source, steered arc A cathodic arc where the arc is moved over the surface under the influence of a magnetic field. 

The coils make a difference. The diodes are steering the collapsing spike into the plug. With no coils I get one HV spark arc at 20 Hz 50% duty using a 555 pulse generator. 

Most current air bags arc mounted with four bolts inside the steering wheel directly over the wheel column, and on the passenger side as a lower knee blocker or under an airbag deployment door. 

Recent detailed work in the gas phase by Steer and Knight > , largely confirming earlier results " , showed that the primary photolytic process by irradiation at ca. 2500 A for methane- and ethane-thiols is the homolysis of the S—H bond (equation 110) to give thiyl radicals and hydrogen atom. The principal products of the reaction arc molecular hydrogen and disulphides. The simple Scheme 9 was proposed for this reaction. 

The FCVA used by Xu et al. [48] was an elbow-shaped evacuated tube with electrodes at each end. The substrate was mounted near one end, and a carbon arc discharge was operated for short intervals at the other. Electric and magnetic fields steered the carbon ions around the bend, but particulate matter was trapped (filtered). Care was exercised to avoid hydrogen contamination.
