Steady Bearings

Steady Bearing a bearing located at the bottom of the shaft of a top entering impeller to minimize shaft deflection and vibration. It is immersed in the fluid being mixed. 

The mixer manufacturer should always be consulted for proper mechanical features design and strength characteristics, such as horsepower, gear rating AGA, shaft diameter, shaft deflection, critical speeds, bottom steady bearing, and side shaft bearings.

The running clearances specified in 2.6.4.2 do not apply to the clearances of steady bearings or interstage bushings. The clearances used shall be stated in the proposal and approved by the purchaser. 

Steady bearings shall be provided to support the shaft and impeller.

The process of determining the location of maximum stress for a shaft using a steady bearing can be tedious. Usually, the location is jnst above the upper impeller. A conservative approach would be to assume prism supports at the ends of the shaft. Then apply hydraulic loads to create moments and sum them at the points shown in Figure 21-35 for the shaft and impeller system shown in Figure 21-34.
