Starch Zulkowsky

Starch, soluble according to Zulkowsky Potassium permanganate Hydrochloric acid (32%)... 

The starch according to Zulkowsky yields a clear solution in cold water without heating this solution can be diluted with ethanol without precipitation of insolubles. For instance 10 ml of a 3% aqueous starch solution can be mixed with 9 ml ethanol (99.5%) without the precipitation of starch [12]. 

Dipping solution Dissolve 2.8 g potassium iodide and 1.4 g soluble starch according to ZuLKowsKY in 70 ml water and dilute with 30 ml absolute ethanol [10]. 

Acetic anhydride and sulfuric acid together also form a powerful acetylating mixture capable of esterifying starch at low temperatures. Pregl treated a Zulkowsky heat-modified potato starch with a mixture of cold acetic anhydride and sulfuric acid. After 40 hours, most of the starch dissolved to produce a product containing 46.7-47.4% acetyl. 

Rising demand is reported for nonfood applications in chemical synthesis, biotechnological production of organic acids, solvents and - biopolymers and in the USA for fuel ethanol (gasohol). Slightly hydrolyzed products with behavior of high-molecular starches are not termed s., but - thin-boiling starches (Lintner and Zulkowsky starches) or -> dextrins. 

Another special type of t. by thermal modification is Zulkowsky starch which is used in the same applications as Lintner starch.
