Stacked MFCs

Using electron acceptors other than oxygen can produce power, but chemicals need to be regenerated. Two different approaches have been taken to try to use metals as the electron acceptor in an MFC. One approach used by Shantaram et al. (2005) and Rhoads et al. (2005) was based on using a solid-state cathode made of manganese oxide. Mn02 is [Pg.105]

By adding L-cysteine inside the anode chamber to successfully mitigate oxygen intrusion, Choi et al. (2011) constructed a miniaturized MFC producing a power density of 47 mW m /2333 W m . The same group presented the first miniaturized MFC array in a series stack to mark a power output of 100 xW and a power density of 0.33 W m and 667 W m (Choi and Chae, 2012). The open circuit voltage of the MFC array was reported to be as high as 2.47 V... [Pg.217]

MFC consists of an anodic chamber and cathodic chamber separated by CEM. The common designs of MFC include a single compartment, double compartment, upflow mode and stacked microbial fuel cell. The single compartment MFC possesses only one chamber, i.e., the anodic chamber. The cathode is either coupled to the anode, fabricated directly on the CEM or in tubular geometry with the anode. Figure 1.20a shows the single compartment MFC. [Pg.32]
