Experimental studies soon confirmed all these expectations. The most powerful tool in achieving these results was the cyclotron. Ernest O. Lawrence, its inventor, was born in Canton, South Dakota, on August 8, 1901. He was educated at St. Olaf College and the University of South Dakota, and did graduate work in physics at Minnesota, Chicago, and Yale. The latter university gave him his doctorate in 1925. He remained at Yale until 1928, and was then called to the University of California at Berkeley, where he still remains as Director of the Radiation Laboratory. He received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1939. It was due to Lawrence and the cyclotron that California became the outstanding center for the synthesis of new elements, which it still remains (I).

Wayne E. (Sonny) Wentworth was bom in Rochester, Minnesota, on May 29, 1930. For two years (1948-1950) he attended Rochester Junior College, where he was elected to the Phi Theta Kappa honorary scholastic society. Over the next two years he studied at St. Olaf College in Northheld, Minnesota, completing the requirements for a B. S. in chemistry. He attended graduate school at Florida State University from 1952 to 1956, during which time he was awarded an Ethyl research scholarship. In June 1957 he received his Ph.D. in analytical-physical chemistry.

Over the same period, Hope College, Juniata College, Monmouth College, St. Olaf College, and Oberlin College combined produced more candidates for doctor s degree in chemistry than did Johns Hopkins University, Fordham University, Columbia University, Tulane University, and Syracuse University, all together. ...
