SSIMS has been applied by van Oou et al. [187] to study of the interfaces in a paint-metal system both quadrupole and TOP SSIMS were employed, as well as XPS. Figure 55from their paper shows the positive SSIMS spectra from the metal (Fig. 55 A) and paint (Fig. 55 B) sides of an interface exposed by soaking samples in A-methylpyrrolidone, which removes the paint by swelling but does not attack it chemically. The metal surface had been phosphate treated before paint application. Both spectra are identified... [Pg.897]

Magnetic mass analyser. Where high mass resolution is a requirement in the SIMS experiment, then the traditional magnetic-sector analyser may be utilised. Presently, however, these magnetic mass analysers are used in the DSIMS mode of characterisation. The transmission of secondary ions is much higher than in the quadrupole system, approximately 1%. Due to its lack of usage within the SSIMS area it will not be described further. [Pg.344]

The mass analyzers most commonly used in the SSIMS technique are magnetic sector, quadrupole, and time-of-flight (TOE) analyzers. The TOE analyzer is based on the principle that ions with different mass/charge ratios will travel a fixed path length in different limes, when they are accelerated through the same potential field. The lighter ions travel at a faster velocity and are thus detected before the heavier ions. Compared to the other mass... [Pg.851]
