SPM system

Different SPM systems were developed to study the thermal properties. Thus a tiny thermocouple can be used to measure the heat flow from the surface and to test the local thermo conductivity of polymer surfaces [161]. An SPM system consists of several basic components probe and its motion sensor, scanner, electric controller, computer and vibration isolation system as schematically shown in Figure 5.1. These components are briefly introduced in the following sections.

Some of these SPM systems can be combined with others - a conducting tip on a cantilever can be operated as a combined STM and AFM. Measurement of both vertical and lateral forces gives a FFM and AFM. Tunneling from a thermocouple tip gives STM and STP, and the combined effect measures local chemical potential [86].

The following will constitute a brief, and necessarily incomplete, account of the essential underlying physical principles which account for the information content of the SPM system. The discussion will be limited to STM/STS and to AFM and its variants.

Topographic image was collected by Multimode AFM (NanoScope pa SPM system,Americ DI/ Veeco,Inc,Santa Barbara CA) equipped with a J scanner.
