Some Further Developments

As indicated in Figure 10.2, there is a distinct change in the slope of the line at carbon numbers 8 to 12, and this has also been observed by other researchers.2-3 This change in the slope cannot be explained by the ASF model, which is based on the premise that the chain growth probability factor (a) is independent from the carbon number. Some further developments of the ASF model by Wojciechowski et al.3 made use of a number of abstract kinetic parameters for the calculation of a product spectrum. Although it still predicts a straight line for the a plot, they suggested that the break in the line is due to different mechanisms of chain termination and could be explained by the superposition of two ideal distributions. This bimodal distribution explained by two different mechanisms...

The chemistry of chiral 1,3-dithiane 1-oxides, in particular their use as chiral auxiliaries, has been reviewed <19980PP145>. Some further developments in this field are the stereoselective a-alkylation with alkyl halides <1997T13149> or a-hydrazination with di-fert-butyl azodicarboxylate (DBAD) <2000T9683>. The carbonyl group of 2-acyl-l,3-dithiane 1-oxides was also used as an electrophile (Scheme 82). Interestingly, acyclic enolates react with these substrates to give a 95 5 mixture of anti- and ry -adduct, whereas cyclic enolates produce a mixture of anti- and ry -adduct in 8 92 ratio <2000JOC6027>. 

Spray dried flavourings have satisfied the demands of the food industry for quite some time. However, manufacturing technologies and application forms for food continue to develop. Modem flavourings have to keep up with these changes and with other special requirements put forward by producers. This has resulted in some further developments in the manufacture of encapsulated flavourings - the so-called complementary procedures - which have come into use in recent years. Complementary procedures are refinements, later developments of the spray drying technique. These methods are dealt with later in this section [1-3],...
