In these ionization procedures, the sample is split up into individual molecules and ionised under as gentle conditions as possible. Ideally, the sample should be dissolved in pure solvent, but this is often not possible since, for most biological macromolecules, salt and buffer solutions are needed to ensure the solubility and structural integrity of the sample. Since the ionic species generated from salts and buffers in the sample can interfere with the mass spectrum produced these need to be kept as dilute as possible. [Pg.265]

The following example describes the first successful synthesis of a soluble and structurally defined ladder polymer by the stepwise route. It illustrates the synthetic potential of the classical route to ribbon-type macromolecules. [Pg.24]

The solute structure is the clue to effective isolation methods by SPE. What are the functional groups on the molecule Is the solute ionic or nonionic What is the aqueous solubility of the molecule In what organic solvents is the molecule soluble One must consider the pH of the sample, ionic strength, and the effect these matrix factors have on the solubility and structure of the analyte. When these questions are answered, then a mode (mechanism) of isolation may be planned, and an eluting solvent may be chosen that will subsequently unlock the mechanism of sorption. [Pg.51]

Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy is a complex technique that is used to determine the constituents of foods. This method makes use of the fact that some compounds contain certain atomic nuclei which can be identified from a nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum, which measures variations in frequency of electromagnetic radiation absorbed. It provides more specific and detailed information of the conformational structure of compoimds than, for example, NIRS but is more costly and requires more time and skUl on the part of the operator. For these reasons, it is more suited to research work and for cases in which the results from simpler spectroscopy techniques require further investigation. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy has been useful in the investigation of the soluble and structural components of forages. [Pg.705]

Several additional relationships between solubility and structure have been observed. [Pg.68]
