The solar production of hydrogen by water photoelectrolysis is an open field in which chemists, electrical engineers, material scientists, physicists, and others practice together. This book is intended as a modern text on the subject for an advanced (undergraduate and up) reader that leads, hopefully, to a point from which the current literature in much of the field can be read with a critical understanding and appreciation. Semiconductors are intrinsic to and hence implicit in water photoelectrolysis, yet the astute reader will have already noticed semiconductor is missing from the title we mean no disrespect to semiconductors, rather we prefer short and hopefully catchy titles.

Alternative resources might not be exploitable today, but that it might become a better bargain when, or if, Armenia scraps nuclear power. Over time, hydrogen, wind and solar productions may attract more and more donor support from the government and from others. 

Figure 2.128 describes the main components of a photovoltaic solar collector system that is connected to the grid. These include the AC service entrance, the AC and DC disconnect switches, the inverter, and the two kWh meters, one tracking the total solar production and the other tracking the electricity flow to (and from) the grid.

Salt has been of economic importance in India and is produced in laige quantities. About two-thirds of the supply comes from solar evaporation and the remainder from natural salt deposits in dry lake beds. Solar production is carried out in a series of open ponds, using hand labor and making very little effort to purify or recrystallize the salt. In addition, in some desert regions, evaporation of subsoil brine is carried out. The development of the salt industry in India was curbed by the tax on its production in fact, the first confrontation between Gandhi and the British government involved the salt tax.

Photocurrents due to the electrochemical reduction and oxidation of H2O (H2 and O2 formation) usually occur at considerable overvoltages.
