Dialysis and Gas Diffusion Dialysis is often used in continuous-flow methods to separate inorganic ions, such as chloride or sodium, or small organic molecules, such as glucose, from high-molecular-weight species, such as proteins. Small ions and molecules diffuse relatively rapidly through hydrophilic membranes of cellulose acetate or nitrate while large molecules do not. Dialysis usually precedes the determination of ions and small molecules in whole blood or serum. [Pg.810]

Citric acid (Kahlbaum), CsHsOy H2O. Molecular weight 210.0. Commercial samples may be recrystallized twice from water and then dried to constant weight over deliquescent sodium bromide. The acid contains one molecule of water of crystallization. Sorensen specifies that solutions of the acid should be clear and give no reaction with barium and silver nitrates. The ash content of 5 g, should be less than 1 mg. Drying at 70° and 20-30 mm. pressure removes the water of crystallization, which corresponds to an 8.58% db 0.1% loss in weight. [Pg.248]

Anhydrous acetic acid melts at 16.635°C and has a cryoscopic constant, Ac = 3.59 Kkgmol . ° Raoult used this solvent for molecular weight determinations and it has been used by several workers " for the investigation of hydrocarbon solutes. The dielectric constant is 6.194 at 18°C. Few investigations of electrolyte solutions have been reported and association is pronounced. Lithium salts in particular, appear to polymerise in acetic acid solution. Turner and Bissett found that lithium iodide, and to a lesser extent lithium nitrate, appear to polymerise, though sodium iodide did not exhibit similar behaviour. Kenttamaa calculated equilibrium constants for the reaction... [Pg.243]

A solution of 1 mg.mr NBD-PE (Avanti) In HEPES buffer (10 mM HEPES, 35 mM sodium nitrate, pH 7.4) was prepared In vesicle form. 60 ul of this was added to 100 ul of stock AChR solution and sonicated for different periods of time, yielding a final system of vesicles approximately 2 molt NBD-PE In I Ipid component, assuming a mean molecular weight of 750 gjK>l for the soybean lecithin. [Pg.334]

Other interesting polymerizations include the use of metal-activated hydrogen peroxide to deliver low molecular weight pol5uners (83,84), continuous polymerization of water-soluble monomers in extruders (85), dry polymerization of acrylic acid in super critical carbon dioxide (86,87) and on a powder bed (88), and the use of sodium nitrate mediated aqueous pol5unerization to allow high solids (89). [Pg.136]
