Societe L Air Liquide, which figured as one of the companies to be nationalized on the initial Socialist list, escaped this fate, no doubt because the disadvantages of taking over this star multinational had been pointed out to the President of the Republic by one of his brothers, who was adviser to the group. On the other hand, Roussel-Uclaf, which had never needed state funds, found the government partly in control of its capital in addition to the main shareholder Hoechst.
