Sliding direction

A similar process can be observed at the asperity level, as shown in Fig. 33, where a lateral force F pulls the upper solid forward by a distance, u, while the asperity attached to the solid body remains in contact with the lower asperity. The value of u at the moment when the asperity is suddenly pulled out of contact gives rise to creep length of static friction. By referring to the force curve shown in the inserted panel of Fig. 33, the creep distance for this system is estimated to be similar with the asperity dimension in the sliding direction, which is in agreement with the measured creep length, 1 fim, as reported in Ref. [30]. 

Cells can be deposited on the slide directly as a suspension, or by using a cytocentrifuge that aids in the attachment of cells to the slide. 

Mount slides directly with anti-fade ProLong Gold containing DAPI. Store slides dark and at 4°C. Evaluate staining result after 24 h.

The wear of the pins on the glass disk was observed with an optical microscope. The worn end of the pin was covered with material from the elastomeric domains. As the tests proceeded, the elastomer appeared to be rolled into thin cylinders oriented perpendicular to the sliding direction.

Immobilization of PCR-amplified cDNA was attempted. A 1 kb LacZ cDNA fragment was PCR amplified using thiol-modified primers so that one strand of the cDNA was thiol-modified. The PCR products were conjugated with mercaptosilane, and the silanized cDNA was spotted on glass slides directly. 

Further fracture surface features, especially distinct for the highly isotactic, coarse spherulitic PP, are polyhedron shaped regions at which the shear crack has left the shear fracture plane in order to stay in a spherulitic boundary region oriented at a flat angle to the sliding direction (Fig. 37d). These sites often constitute secondary crack nuclei in boundaries perpendicular to the shear fracture plane.
