Site synergism

The concept of clinical synergism, which m be extremely difficult to demonstrate convincingly. Even with trimethoprim plus sulphamethoxazole, where tme synergism occurs in vitro, the optimum ratio of the two components may not always be present in vivo, i.e. at the site of infection in a particular tissue. 

The failures of CeOj alone or RhjOj alone to yield RO or 01-type paramagnetic centers, when subjected to the same experimental strategy as that which did yield such centers over RhOj/CeOj after T > 573 K, pointed to synergism between the RhO, and CeO components of the latter in producing at 300 K the dioxygen species required for 01 and for RO-type signals, possibly through the intermediacy of Rh-O-o-Ce and Rh-O-O-Ce interfacial sites. 

For more efficient utilization of MOFs sorbents, several hybrid systems based on MOFs with other solid sorbents have been investigated in the literature. The objective of having hybrid materials is to utilize the synergism between the two sorbents and therefore ultimately improve the overall performance in C02 separation. Moreover, sorbents such as activated carbons, graphenes, and CNTs provide the added feature of high surface area and easily functionalized sites which contribute to the tuning of the final properties of the composite... 

When two compounds exert the same action by acting at different sites, their interaction will often result in a synergistic effect but a simple additive effect is also a possibility (the synergism between smoking and asbestos exposure is the classical example).
